Painting Trip Up The Ridge At Gaviota State Park

Last saturday there was a Scape Paint-Out at Gaviota, near the entrance to the old Hollister Ranch. I didn't see any of my fellow Scape-es when I got there, but I had it in mind to go up the hill, so I did. I did a lot of moving around, exploring, as I had never been there before, and finally decided to paint looking back down the coast towards Santa Barbara.

(This painting is not finished yet).

As I unpacked to paint I found that I had lost both the little quick release part of my tripod, and the wing nut to one of the legs of my french easel. That's what I am mumbling about in the following video.

On the way back I did succeed in finding the tripod piece, but I didn't find the wing nut, and the leg fell off on the way back (it was almost dark by the time I got back to my car) so I had to go back on Thursday to find it. Luckily I found it, and did some more work on the painting from another vantage point, but it was a totally different sort of day: cold, foggy and miserable.

Below is a nice panoramic view of the Santa Barbara Channel from up on that ridge. One can see tha Gaviota Pier with Sant Cruz Island above it and Santa Rosa in the center. San Miguel is visible on the right behind that oil platform, but it's hard to see it in this small version of the photo.
